The girls of Chocolat had garnered much attention even before their debut.
The background of these girls were different from all other idol girl groups. Born between American fathers and Korean mothers, there are the bi-racial girls Tia (15), Melanie (15), and Juliane (19), then you have the two Korean members Min Soa (23) and Jaeyoon (21). Being the first group to be comprised of mainly bi-racial members, it was enough to draw an enormous attention on them.
Their beautiful looks and enviable bodies were also the source of the hype. As the hype grew nearing their debut, so did the expectations about their vocal and dance talents.
So they’ve released their first digital single on the 17th and had their debut stages on cable and broadcast tv music programs. The reactions after their performance were varied, some have called them “Giant sized new girl group” and some said they “Fell short of expectation”. Chocolat members have stated about their debut performance, “As much as we were nervous and frightened, we too were not pleased with our performance”.
Tia stated “I was very happy to be on stage and I wanted to do well, I felt I could have done better. We were too nervous to show our full potential” and she lamented about the debut stage. Jaeyoon also spoke of her disappointment. She stated “I sang the wrong note on our first stage. We couldn’t even show 90 percent of what we are capable of, let alone 100 percent. I think were just too nervous”.
Then Melanie chimed in “There were many people rooting for us, but there were many others who were disappointed. We understood what it meant because we were also disappointed. We will make sure to not disappoint on our next performance. We love even the hateful comments. We are only thankful that people pay attention to us”.
As disappointing as their debut performance was, the girls admit it was one of the most exciting things they’ve ever experienced. They also admit they are getting used to being on stage. They want the chance to show their individual charm and appeal that have been hidden underneath the hype of their bi-racial identity.
Tia has always been pretty, she even modeled in Japan thanks to her beautiful looks. She looks far more mature than her age and that is very evident in the photoshoot she’s had with actor Ji Hyun Woo. One can hardly believe she’s only 15.
Melanie is the energizer of the group. She is cute and charming as the youngest, but she’s a go-getter and a straight-shooter. Juliane used to cheerlead back in the US and she’s got the body to prove it.
The eldest of the group is caring, but she’s also the discipliner, they call her ‘Mommy’ in the group. She was a foreign student in Australia and she is multi-talented. The group’s main vocal Jayoon has great vocal talents and there is a certain charisma about her. They may put on a powerful performance on stage, but they are really just sweet young girls.
The girls of Chocolat explained, “We all have different personalities and different appeals. When we are one as Chocolat is when the true color of our group is seen”.
One would imagine the girls would clash due to their different backgrounds and cultures, but they say they get along so well that they’ve never had an argument. The girls have stressed on their strong teamwork.
Malanie spoke “At first it was me, Tia, and Juliane who were chosen, then Soa and Jaeyoon joined in. It felt like they filled an empty void. We needed someone older who could lead us and someone who could show us and teach us about the Korean culture. We are very fortunate to have them. We became complete when Soa and Jaeyoon joined in”.
Chocolat were also right in the middle of the firestorm on the ‘White Supremacy’ controversy. They are not comfortable being featured solely for their skin color or for their race, but they feel it is their responsibility to rid of such stereotype.
The members have repeatedly said, “We don’t want to be known as the bi-racial girls, we want to be known as Chocolat and we want to be remembered for our performance. We want to earn the hearts of the fans with our talents”.
Just like their title song ‘Syndrome‘, the girls have created quite a syndrome that they’ve only dreamt of until now.
The girls continued “We want to show who Chocolat really are, we want to make sure that when you think of Chocolat, you think of a talented girl group with great appeal. We want to make your stress go away when you see us perform, we want to make you happy, and we want to put a smile on your face. So please look forward to Chocolat’s syndrome.
